Chapter 20

Urslan thought it best that he speak with the king of the Kalaran Kingdom alone first before Bran joined him. King Roderick was still new to his role. He’d been forced to step up earlier than anyone had ever expected when his father had died. Whispers were that if it wasn’t for Duke Baxter, the king’s uncle and a non-summoner, Kalaran would have fallen apart after Indri had been destroyed by Volrath.

Bran had been right to ensure that Urslan and the others weren’t cut off from the Mortal Realm. His plan had been to rush straight to the king himself and tell him everything that was going on.

Part of him still thought that was the best plan. It seemed like a waste of time to have Urslan butter up the man first. There was no way to put “your entire world is about to be invaded by a superior fighting force” lightly. Why try?

Maybe that’s why it’s better I’m not the one doing it…

Since night had already fallen, not just in the Lost Realm but in the Mortal Realm as well, Alaro, Lara, and Patrick managed to convince Bran to come down to the tavern. Apparently, they all thought he could use a break after he had described what he had been up to for the past few months. “Convince” was perhaps too strong a word. They certainly didn’t have to twist his arm.

He knew he shouldn’t lose training time, but he had been going nonstop for months. Perhaps a break would help him see his path to power more clearly. Or maybe I just want to spend some time with my friends. He’d earned that by now, hadn’t he?

“Are you going”—Alaro waved a finger, gesturing at Bran as a whole—“like that?”

Bran looked down at himself as they walked through the lower archive’s hallway, past all the portal doors—portals they would be very unwise to step through, now that time had been altered in this realm. In fact, Bran wasn’t even sure if they would be able to step through them. Not something I wish to find out.

Urslan had informed the assistant headmistress, Helena, to ban travel off-realm, though there had yet to be an announcement as to why.

Bran took in his appearance. The red veins running through his rock-hard skin. The general bestial look about him.

Patrick, a Beastmaster, raised an eyebrow. “I don’t see the problem.”

Alaro pursed his lips but seemed to bite back his next words with a quick nod.

“It’s not like anyone will know he’s in the Worldbreaker State,” Lara put in. “They won’t even know what the Worldbreaker state is. And where would the harm be if they did? Everyone already knows what Bran is by now.”

Alaro’s gaze stuck straight ahead, his shoulders tense. He walked with an unusual rigidity, one most unlike the lithe Ranger. “People might think differently about Worldbreakers once they find out they’re about to invade.”

Bran stopped mid-step. The others took a moment to realize as he was at the back of the group.
